Folding wings: the 777X trick
Boeing’s 777-9 has such long wings (71.8 m) that it would not fit standard airport gates. The solution is a first for airliners: the last 3.5 m of each wing folds up on the ground, shrinking the span to 64.8 m.
Fighters are tiny by comparison
An F-16 is about 15 m long with a 10 m wingspan: you could park roughly twenty of them in the footprint of one A380. What fighters lack in size they make up in thrust — an F-22 can climb and cruise faster than the speed of sound without afterburner.
